November is National Hospice Month. Hospice was founded as an organization in the United States near the close of the last century to provide compassionate, patient-centered treatment in the final months of life. Hospice ensures that the terminally ill receive comfort with compassion and are extended dignity at life’s end. With the shift of perspective from treating the disease to treating the person when cure is no longer possible, hospice provides advanced pain and symptom management to the patient, emotional and spiritual support to the patient and the family, and a kind, caring shoulder to lean on when one is needed.
Hospice extends care to nearly two million terminally ill individuals and their families annually. Some of the services hospice provides are:
- Management of patient pain and symptoms
- Providing necessary medication, medical supplies and equipment
- Assisting the patient with the emotional and spiritual aspects of passing
- Guiding the family in care-giving for the patient
- Providing respite care for the family
- Extending bereavement counseling to the family
These services are provided by compassionate, dedicated, and highly trained professionals and volunteers. Utilizing a team approach, hospice care is personalized to the patient’s needs and desires with treatment that ensures comfort at the end of life’s journey. National Hospice Month honors these care givers who are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others by living out Mother Teresa’s premise: “Let us touch the dying…according to the graces we’ve received…”
Hospice is founded on the vision of “a world where individuals and families facing serious illness, death, and grief will experience the best that humankind can offer.” HighPoint Hospice incorporates this vision in caring for those facing life’s end. Having walked by the side of many others at their point of need, we are well equipped to strengthen, encourage, and support you and your family in a time of great need. As we’ve done with numerous other families, HighPoint Hospice will answer your questions and assist you by providing quality comfort and care. “To give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity.” This we extend to you in your time of need.
